IMPRESSIVE LARGE CHARLES II PEWTER BROAD RIM ...

Item Ref
P-112

Description:
Antique English pewter broad rim charger of impressive large size. The rim is engrave with a mantled coat of arms, and also bears a set of hallmarks for an unrecorded maker. The reverse rim bears a shield shaped possible makers mark along with a triad 'G' over 'G E'.

Notes on the arms (courtesy of Bonham's):
The arms on this charger are unhatched - the tinctures (colours) of the arms are not designated - and so it is difficult to arrive at a definitive identification of the families they represents.

The dexter arms were borne (in a variety of combinations of tinctures) by various branches of the PALMER family. The sinister arms are probably those of PARKER, first granted by letters patent in 1537 to Henry Parker of Frith Hall, Essex. If this identification is correct, this coat of arms represents the marriage of a male of the Palmer family and a woman bearing the name Parker.

The only identified marriage between a Palmer man and a Parker woman was solemnized in 1645, when Richard Palmer married Olive Parker in Allexton, Leicestershire. The will of Olive Palmer of Loddington, Leicester was proved on 1 February 1678/9.

It is possible, therefore, that the arms on this charger represent the union between the Parker and Palmer families of Leicestershire and Northamptonshire. Three escutcheons, each charged with a pheon are carved in stone above the porch of the Old House, Kibworth Harcourt, Leicestershire. The building also bears the date 1678. It is believed to have been built by William Parker (d. 1699), whose memorial tablet is in Kibworth Beauchamp church.

It is possible that the Richard Palmer who married Olive Parker was a member of the Palmer family of East Carlton, Northamptonshire and Carlton Curlieu, Leicestershire – both very close to Kibworth Harcourt – the most prominent member of which was Geoffrey Palmer (1598-1670), lawyer, MP, royalist and Attorney General, who was knighted and elevated to a baronetcy upon the Restoration in 1660.

Condition:
The charger is in good condition with a lightly polished finish to the front, there are some knife marks to the front showing signs of use. The reverse is unpolished with some flaking oxide.

Repairs: There are no repairs that I can detect

Size: 23.25 inch diameter (59.00cm).
The rim is 4.25 inch (10.80cm), which represents 37%.

CHARLES II PEWTER 20.25in BROAD RIM CHARGER ...

Item Ref
P-179

Description:
Antique English pewter broad rim charger of 20.25in diameter, by Lawrence Dyer of Aldermanbury, St. Lawrence, London; who worked 1649 - 1691.
The charger has a full set of hallmarks to the front rim and a touchmark to the reverse rim.
The front rim is engraved with a crest, it is suggested that this is the family crest of the Skrymshire family of Norbury, Staffordshire. The paternal arms were granted to John SKRYMSHIRE of Norbury in 1584. The family were derived from Nottinghamshire and the second and third quarters of the paternal quarterly show the arms of the MUSCHAMP family, Geoffrey SKRYMSHIRE (born 1430) having earlier in Nottinghamshire married the heiress Margaret MUSCHAMP (born 1435). Although the maternal impaled arms are at present unidentified it is expected that the arms are a variant of the TALBOT family arms, John SKRYMSHIRE having married Dorothy TALBOT in the early 17th century. The blazon: quarterly of four - 1,4: gules, a lion rampant or, within a bordure vair (Skrimshire). 2,3: azure, a chevron between three butterflies argent (Muschamp) - impaling - argent, two chevronells gules (Talbot?)

Provenance:
A private Oxfordshire collection, purchased from Witney Antiques in 1981.

Condition:
The charger is in good condition with a lightly cleaned and polished finish to the front and reverse.

Repairs: There are a few old and very well executed small repairs as can be seen in the images.

Provenance:

Ex J Douglas Collection (no P32).
Purchased from Robin Bellamy, Peter Hornsby, Grosvenor House Antiques Fair, London 1985.

Notes on 'Morice'.

The coat of arms engraved to the front of this plate is 'gules, a lion rampant regardant' with a crest above of 'a falcon standing on a perch'. This coat of arms is for Morice of Werrington, Devon. The 3rd Baronet, Sir William Morice (1707 - 1750) succeeded his Father the 2nd Baronet in 1726. Sir William died in 1750 without issue and the Baronetcy became extinct.
Based on the touch mark for John Carpenter (1711 - 1747) and the style of the plate it is likely that this plate was made for Sir William Morice, 3rd Baronet by John Carpenter.
